MUSCAT – The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, in collaboration with the Department of Projects, Tendering and Regional Content, has awarded contracts worth R186.3 million for two major road projects aimed at reducing congestion and improving connectivity across the Sultanate.

The agreement includes the expansion of the Muscat Expressway from the Qurum Nature Park intersection to the Harban intersection and the Ibla Road (Al Yahamedi-Al Kafisi) dual carriageway project. The expansion of the Muscat Expressway accounts for more than R157.2 million of the total investment, while the Ibra Dual Motorway project is valued at R29.1 million.

Hamis bin Mohammed Al Shamaki, Undersecretary of Transport, said the project is a strategic step to increase the efficiency of the national road network in line with rapid urban and population growth. He said the development will improve connectivity between governments and provide a safer and more efficient transport environment.

According to Badr bin Salem Al Mamari, Chairman of the Department of Projects, Tendering and Local Content, the two projects underline the government’s continued focus on developing the road sector as a pillar of integrated development.

The expansion of the Muscat Expressway includes upgrading the Qorum Nature Park and Saif Al Marri roundabouts to signalized intersections, widening the section to Harban and connecting it with the Al Batinah Expressway. Works also include adding lanes at the entrances and exits of most bridges, building a direct exit on Lusail Bridge for traffic heading towards Burj Al Sahawa, and constructing a new overpass to streamline the flow of traffic towards Suhar from Ruwi, Al Qud 6 and Dahiliya.

Improvements will also be made along the service road from Gubura to Mabela to ease merging traffic.

The Muscat Expressway project is expected to increase road capacity, reduce congestion during peak hours, improve safety and reduce travel times, while the Ibra Two Roadway will further improve connectivity within northern Sharqiyah and neighboring governorates.
