Russia: Will respond militarily if US deploys missile defense system in Greenland – Saudi News

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced this week that his country is ready for a world without restrictions on nuclear weapons after the end of the New START Treaty.

“If the United States deploys a large number of missile defense systems on the island of Greenland, Russia will be forced to take compensatory measures in the military field,” Ryabkov said in a statement today (Tuesday).

He added that the US approach to relations with Russia needs to change for the better before dialogue on strategic stability can resume. He noted that China has adopted a clear position on arms control, and Russia respects this position just as the Chinese government respects Russia’s position.

Russian officials called on France and the United Kingdom to join arms control negotiations to ensure they are multilateral.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen warned yesterday Monday that although US President Donald Trump has ruled out the use of military force, Washington still seeks to take control of the largely Arctic island.

“Our attitude towards Greenland and its people has not changed,” Nielsen said in a speech to parliament. Greenland would be tied to the United States and governed from there. ” He added that the United States continues to explore ways to own and manage Greenland.

Notably, President Trump increased his demands for control of Greenland at the beginning of the year, citing national security concerns about Russia and China threatening to dismantle NATO, but backed off on the threat of military force and said the agreement with NATO guaranteed full US access to Greenland, although details were unclear.

Last January, President Trump said details of the U.S. deal on Greenland were still being negotiated, a day after he withdrew his threat to impose new tariffs and ruled out using force to seize the Danish island.

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced that Russia is ready for a world without restrictions on nuclear weapons after the New START treaty expires this week.

Ryabkov said in comments today (Tuesday): If the United States deploys many missile defense systems in Greenland, Russia will be forced to take compensatory measures in the military field.

He added that there must be a positive change in the US approach to relations with Russia before restarting dialogue on strategic stability. He noted that China has adopted a clear position on arms control, and Russia respects this position just as the Chinese government respects Russia’s position.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen warned yesterday (Monday) that despite US President Donald Trump’s removal of military force, Washington still seeks control of the largely Arctic island.

“Our position towards Greenland and its people has not changed. Greenland will remain connected to and governed by the United States,” Nielsen said in a speech to parliament. He added that the United States continues to explore ways to own and manage Greenland.

Notably, President Trump earlier this year increased his calls for control of Greenland, citing national security concerns about Russia and China threatening to dismantle NATO, but backed off from threatening the use of force and said the United States would have full access to Greenland under the agreement with NATO, although the details were unclear.

In January, President Trump said details of the U.S. deal on Greenland were still being negotiated, a day after he withdrew his threat to impose new tariffs and ruled out using force to seize Danish territory.
