Media reports have sparked serious condemnation of the circumstances surrounding the assassination of Libyan politician Saif al-Islam Muammar Gaddafi, the son of the late Libyan leader, and brought the issue of the Libyan conflict back to the forefront of regional and international discussions.

French accusations come to the forefront

The Russia Today channel, citing sources, accused France of involvement in the assassination of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the outlet reported, noting that French President Emmanuel Macron had approved the liquidation of “undesirable” politicians in African countries, with Saif al-Islam among those targeted.

Official confirmation of his death

Later, the Libyan Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s death was due to gunshot wounds. In a statement carried by the Libyan News Agency (WAL), the office said that immediately after receiving the report of the death, investigators began procedures in accordance with the prosecutor’s instructions, which included moving to the crime scene, conducting tests, seizing evidence, and interviewing witnesses and anyone who could provide relevant information.

Criminal investigation details

The prosecutor’s office announced that the investigation team, accompanied by forensic scientists and experts in the fields of weapons, fingerprints, toxicology, and specialized science, examined the deceased’s body, and the examination confirmed that he sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The statement confirmed that the investigation continues to collect evidence and take the necessary legal steps to identify the suspect group and bring public proceedings against those involved.

Legal condemnation and pursuit of responsibility

Meanwhile, Dr. Saif al-Islam Muammar Gaddafi’s legal team issued a statement condemning the assassination, calling it a serious crime and a grave violation of Libyan law, Islamic customs and traditions, and the rules of international law. The statement suggested that Saif al-Islam is one of the most prominent proponents of comprehensive national reconciliation, rejection of violence, promotion of dialogue and peaceful solutions, and uniting Libyans away from the logic of revenge and conflict, given that he is against the backdrop of continuous attempts at political exclusion since 2011.

Demanding a transparent investigation

The defense team called on the judicial and security authorities to launch an urgent and transparent investigation to expose and hold all those involved, and stressed the importance of the role of local and international human rights organizations in following the case and ensuring the truth is not obscured.

Gaddafi’s living sons

It is noteworthy that of Muammar Gaddafi’s seven sons, in addition to his mother, only four are still alive: Muhammad, al-Saadi, Hannibal, and his daughter Aisha, all of whom live outside Libyan territory.
