Spain’s Indra Group announced that Saudi Arabian Railways (SAR), the state-backed national railway company, has extended the operation and maintenance (O&M) contract for Saudi Arabia’s Mecca-Medina high-speed line.

The group will continue to support and operate Haramain High Speed Rail’s technical rail traffic management, signaling, telecommunications, reservations, ticketing, access control, safety and IT systems, it said in a statement.

The deal increases the company’s order backlog to more than 130 million euros ($155 million) and includes an extension of at least five years.

The new contract, signed by the Spanish consortium Consorcio España Alta Velocidad Meca Medina (CEAVMM), will include 20 additional trains from Talgo, Spain, which will also be equipped with the group’s communications system.

The group said in a statement that the line’s integrated rail traffic management system (TMS), which connects the two Saudi cities, is essential to the safe and efficient operation of the more than 450-kilometre line and the transport of 900,000 passengers each month.

The company also provides comprehensive management of Riyadh’s ticketing system, which operates over 800 bus and BRT routes.

Indra Group has more than 2,500 mobility projects in more than 100 cities in 50 countries around the world.
