As the war between Russia and Ukraine approaches the end of its fourth year, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced today (Friday) that new negotiations will be held with Kiev next week.
He told a press conference that the next round of Ukraine settlement talks will be held in Geneva on February 17 and 18, with the presence of representatives from Russia, the United States and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Kiev is seeking to support a US peace proposal to end the war with Russia as President Donald Trump seeks to resolve the conflict ahead of next November’s midterm elections.
President Zelenskiy said in an interview published yesterday (Thursday) in The Atlantic that Kiev is ready to hold a presidential election and a referendum on the deal, but added that it will not accept any deal that harms Ukraine’s interests.
He said that the method we chose was to make Americans not want us to continue the war. That’s why we started supporting their proposals in every way to accelerate things.
He added that Ukraine is not afraid of anything. Are you ready for elections? You’re ready. Are you ready for a referendum? Preparations are complete.
President Zelenskiy denied a report in the Financial Times this week that an election and referendum would be held on February 24, the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion.
He said there were still issues to be resolved, including a ceasefire and U.S. security proposals against future invasions.
The magazine quoted him as saying, “No one clings to his power.” I’m ready for the election. But for that to happen, we need security, security guarantees, and a ceasefire. ”
