Egypt announced today that the first phase of its power interconnection project with Saudi Arabia will be launched with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts.

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat said the electricity interconnection project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia will play a key role in stabilizing the national power grid next summer.

The minister said power would start in the first phase of the project with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts, supporting emergency plans to secure power in the summer of 2026.

According to Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy, this took place today during a meeting between President Abdel-Fattah El-Sissi, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat to review the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy’s plans to secure electricity for the population in the coming summer season, in order to cope with the increased consumption growth rate of the national grid.

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity added during the meeting that during the upcoming summer, the load on the national power grid is expected to increase in the range of 6-7%, therefore 3,000 megawatts of solar energy will be added during this fiscal year and new capacity will be added to the battery storage system before the summer, for a total of 600 megawatts, bringing the total capacity available on the network with this technology to 1,100 megawatts. This was revealed today during a meeting between President Abdel-Fattah El-Sissi, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Asmat to review the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy’s plans to ensure electricity supply to the population in the coming summer season in response to the rising consumption rate of the national grid, according to Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy.

Expected increase

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity added during the meeting that the load on the country’s power grid is expected to increase by 6-7% during the coming summer. It is therefore planned to add 3,000 megawatts of solar energy during this year, as well as a total of 600 megawatts of new battery storage capacity by the summer, bringing the total capacity available to the grid with this technology to 1,100 megawatts.
