Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reiterated his commitment to continue to strengthen the country’s full sovereignty over its territory, to limit the use of weapons to the armed forces only, and to work to rebuild what has been destroyed with the will of the nation and the support of its friends.
Speaking at a press conference with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Beirut today (Monday), Prime Minister Aoun stressed that national unity can only be achieved through complete independence and the expansion of state power without partners.
He said that Lebanese people have learned from their own experience and that of their allies that a free and united will can overcome even the most severe destruction, and that breaking down the wall of hatred left by successive occupations and guardianships begins with a comprehensive national decision to put Lebanon’s interests first.
Prime Minister Aoun called on the German side to continue to convey to the world the true picture of Lebanon, underscoring the commitment of the Lebanese state to learn lessons from its own experiences and those of its friends, and to work first in the interests of Lebanon in the interests of its people and peace in the region.
The Lebanese President emphasized that the Lebanese adhere to this approach and the peace option, recalling that during his visit to Beirut in 2018, Mr. Steinmeier described the capital as “a place where dialogue succeeds” and said that the Lebanese “transformed painful experiences into principles of survival.”
Steinmeier expressed his country’s support for stability in Lebanon, expressed his love for what he described as a great country, and recalled his visit to Lebanon during the 2006 war and the suffering of the Lebanese people at that time. He emphasized Germany’s continued support for the Lebanese army, noting that Berlin will remain with Lebanon even after the end of its mission within the UNIFIL forces, and said that Germany is one of the main parties in security and development cooperation with Lebanon.
The German President stressed the importance of reforms and rebuilding the trust of the people and international partners, considering that Germany’s goal is regional stability and peace, which reflects the calm within Lebanon. He appreciated the Lebanese state’s burden of hosting large numbers of refugees from Syria and the Palestinian territories, and expressed gratitude for Lebanon’s efforts to achieve a ceasefire with Israel.
He stressed the need for Lebanon and Israel to abide by the ceasefire agreement, called for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, and said that the disarmament of Hezbollah must proceed in earnest within the framework of strengthening the sovereignty and increasing stability of the Lebanese state.
