The Directorate General of Ports (Mawani) announced that Maersk International Group, through its wholly-owned subsidiary APM Terminals, has acquired a 37.5% stake in the Southern Container Terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port. This is a move that makes Jeddah one of Maersk’s most important gateways to strengthen connectivity to the local market and its global shipping network.
This trend will strengthen the integration of ports and their direct services within Maersk’s operational system and contribute to increasing the level of maritime connectivity with regional and international ports, giving trade movements across the Saudi greater flexibility and speed in reaching different markets.
This partnership is expected to contribute to increasing Maersk’s strategic position in Jeddah Islamic Port and increase the number of vessels and transshipment containers, in addition to attracting more shipping routes to partner with Maersk and its partners and strengthening Jeddah Islamic Port’s position as a major trading hub on the Red Sea coast.
This development confirms the attractiveness of the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics center and hub connecting three continents, and will support the achievement of the national transport and logistics strategy and Saudi Vision 2030 goals by expanding international maritime connectivity and strengthening the Kingdom’s integration with global supply chains.
It is worth noting that the Southern Container Terminal has five advanced berths for handling containers and a capacity of 4.1 million standard containers, while the Jeddah Islamic Port is the largest on the Red Sea coast and thanks to its strategic location and 62 multi-purpose berths, plays an active role in strengthening Saudi leadership in the maritime sector and occupies an important position at regional and international levels.
