KABUL – Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense said on Sunday it would respond to reports of Pakistan’s airstrikes on its territory with an “appropriate and measured response” at an “appropriate time”.
In a statement published in X, the ministry condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms” and called it a violation of national sovereignty, international law, the principle of good neighborliness and Islamic values.
The group said targeting civilian and religious facilities reflected intelligence and security deficiencies, adding: “Such repeated acts of aggression can never hide their internal deficiencies.”
Afghan media and Pakistan’s Ministry of Information reported that the Pakistani military carried out airstrikes on multiple areas in eastern and southeastern Afghanistan.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced on X that intelligence operations had targeted seven camps and hideouts belonging to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban and Islamic State Khorasan province in the border area in a “retaliatory response.”
The ministry said the strikes followed recent suicide bombings in Pakistan and called on Afghanistan’s interim government to prevent insurgents from using Afghan territory to attack Pakistan.
Pakistan earlier vowed revenge for the killing of two security personnel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday and warned that attacks from Afghanistan would not go unresponsive.
