Car sales in Europe fell in January last year after a six-month series of increases as traditional manufacturers sought to compete with cheaper Chinese models.
According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, the number of new car registrations decreased by 3.5% year-on-year to 961,382,000 vehicles, with increases in the UK and Italy but declines in major markets such as Germany and France.
Overall, the number of gasoline vehicle registrations in January decreased by 26% compared to the same month last year, and the European market share fell to just over one-fifth.
In contrast, sales of electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and plug-in hybrid vehicles increased by 14%, 32%, and 6%, respectively.
