Yesterday (Tuesday), the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency published a direct message in Farsi to Iranian citizens through its official account on the “X” platform, confirming that the agency “hears you and wants your help” and providing detailed technical instructions for conducting secure and confidential communications.
The message was published in an official tweet from the agency’s main account, along with a video in Persian that lasts about 2 minutes and 15 seconds. This video provides step-by-step instructions on how to establish a secure virtual connection, with an emphasis on protecting the identity and safety of those communicating.
The tweet immediately received a lot of responses. In just a few hours, it received over 18,000 likes, 4,000 reposts, and over 2.3 million views.
In messages and videos, the agency stressed that the safety and security of its communication partners is its “top priority,” warning of the dangers of electronic surveillance in Iran and calling for strict security measures to be taken according to each individual’s personal circumstances.
The message comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, particularly after large-scale protests in the country in December and January and the United States’ imposition of new sanctions on Iranian officials for suppressing freedom of expression and peaceful demonstrations.
It also coincided with suspicious text messages received by tens of thousands of Iranians that referred to the US president and a “businessman,” raising concerns about cyberattacks and propaganda operations.
The CIA has previously announced similar campaigns in Chinese to recruit sources in China, part of the agency’s public strategy to encourage communications from countries with strict electronic censorship.
This coincides with the resumption of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States in the Sultanate of Oman on February 6, which had been suspended following the Israeli-American attack on Iran in June 2025.
The second round of negotiations, hosted by Oman, was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 18, and delegations from both countries are scheduled to meet again tomorrow (Thursday) in Geneva.
The United States has demanded that Iran completely halt its uranium enrichment activities and transfer enriched uranium out of the country, and has threatened to use military force against Iran.
