After 14 years of closure, Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani today (Wednesday) in Damascus discussed with Tom Barrack, the US special envoy to Syria, the logistical and political arrangements needed to reopen the US embassy in Syria.
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the two countries discussed a number of strategic files to establish a new phase of cooperation between the two countries, indicating that both sides underlined their absolute commitment to the unity of Syria’s territory and national sovereignty over the entire geography.
During the talks, both sides reviewed the practical steps achieved in the file integrating the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into the institutions of the Syrian state.
The ministry said Barak discussed with Al-Shaibani the importance of supporting Syria in the fight against ISIS and activating its role as a key partner in regional security. The American envoy emphasized the interest of major American companies to participate in the reconstruction of the Syrian economy, especially in the oil and energy sector, and to open investment horizons to international expertise.
