RIYADH – The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced on Monday that two drones attempting to attack the Ras Tanura refinery were intercepted and destroyed.
Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki said the interception operation caused debris fall and limited fire, but no civilians were injured.
He added that during the interception, debris fell near civilian facilities and residents.
In a separate statement, an official Ministry of Energy official said the Ras Tanura oil refinery sustained limited damage due to debris from an intercept by two drones near the facility at 7:04 a.m. on Monday.
Officials said the debris caused a minor fire, which was quickly extinguished by emergency response teams. No injuries or deaths were reported.
The official added that some operational units at the refinery were temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure, but oil supplies to local markets and derivative products were not affected.
