Saudi Arabia on Tuesday strongly condemned the Iranian attack on the US embassy in Riyadh and stressed that it reserves the right to respond, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The statement said Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its full right to take all necessary measures to protect its security and vital interests, including the option of responding to any aggression.

The government condemned the attack as a “clear violation of international law and norms, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”

Saudi Arabia said Iran “took this blatant action despite knowing that Saudi Arabia had confirmed that it would not allow its airspace and territory to be used to target Iran.” He warned that Iranian aggression in the region could lead to further escalation in the region.

It stressed that it reserves the right to take all measures to protect its security, territory, people, residents and vital interests.

Saudi Defense Ministry spokesman Turki al-Malki announced that Iran attacked the U.S. embassy in the Saudi capital early Tuesday with two drones.

The attack caused limited fire and minor damage to the building, he added.
