French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday that he would send the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its battle group to the Eastern Mediterranean in the name of protecting French and European interests and closely monitoring developments on the ground, a move that reflects Paris’s entry into the accelerating tensions in the Middle East.
In a televised speech, President Macron criticized military operations by the United States and Israel, saying they were carried out outside the framework of international law and stressing that Japan cannot tolerate them. But at the same time, he insisted that Iran was primarily responsible for tensions in the region.
He explained that the decision to relocate the aircraft carrier took into account the “unstable situation” with a lot of ambiguity surrounding the coming days, noting that the naval deployment is aimed at simultaneously strengthening readiness and deterrence.
The French president pledged to continue to strengthen France’s defense capabilities in the region, unveiling parallel measures including sending defense systems to Cyprus, deploying advanced air defense systems and radars, as well as Rafale fighter jets. He also announced his country’s intention to form an international coalition to reopen and secure the sea route.
France’s move puts Paris in a position to become more involved in regional tensions, amidst a range of potential military and diplomatic competition.
