European football’s governing body announced sanctions against Turkey’s Galatasaray last week after fans threw projectiles, set off fireworks and caused a disturbance during the team’s trip to face Italy’s Juventus in a Champions League Round of 16 qualifier.
Turkish club Galatasaray will no longer be able to sell tickets to fans for next Tuesday’s Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Liverpool.
A man and his daughter were injured when fireworks were thrown at Juventus fans in Turin, according to media reports.
Galatasaray lost 3-2 to hosts Juventus last Wednesday, but two goals in extra time sealed their place in the round of 16 with a 7-5 aggregate win in the two play-offs and prevented the Italian side, who played with 10 players, from making up for their loss in the first leg.
Juventus were in a difficult position after losing 2-5 in Istanbul, but they forced extra time on their opponents and it seemed like the situation would be tilted in their favor, but Victor Osimhen scored a goal just before the end of the first half of extra time, and Bariš Alper Yilmaz added another goal in the final minute.
The European Union’s disciplinary committee fined the Turkish champions 40,000 euros (about $46,000) for the fan’s actions. On Wednesday, the European Union Appeals Board rejected Galatasaray’s appeal against the punishment.
Galatasaray are scheduled to face Liverpool next Tuesday, with their return match to be played on March 18th.
