Iraq’s Ministry of Agriculture announced achieving self-sufficiency in more than 48 agricultural products and banning imports from abroad, underscoring the continued growth of the agricultural sector despite climate change and drought.
“Despite water revenue shortfalls, climate change and drought, the growth of Iraq’s agricultural sector continues at an upward pace,” said Mahdi Al-Jubouri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Al Jubri added: “The ministry is working to supply agricultural crops, including summer and winter vegetables, by following modern agricultural techniques such as plastic-protected farming and drip irrigation methods during the winter season, as well as summer crops using traditional irrigation methods.”
As a result of these measures, more than 48 agricultural products including tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflower, lettuce, and other leafy vegetables were imported in abundance, in addition to various dates, whose imports have been prohibited since 2003, and self-sufficiency has been achieved.

“Other products such as honey, edible eggs, and live frozen chicken are also subject to import ban decisions to protect local products and support farmers,” Al Jubouri said. He said these measures are in line with the ministry’s efforts to protect local products and ensure market stability.
He pointed out that price control in the local market is achieved by balancing demand and supply. This has not only prevented the intrusion of smuggled goods from overseas, but also made local products widely available at stable prices.
