On Monday, President Trump announced a new “trade agreement” with New Delhi after a phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It states that India will suspend purchases of Russian oil, while considering supplementing it with oil imports from the United States and possibly Venezuela.

President Trump explained that Prime Minister Modi had agreed to a switch from Russian crude oil in exchange for India’s increased purchases of U.S. crude oil, and pointed out that alternatives could include Venezuelan crude oil.

Meanwhile, the US president confirmed that he would lower tariffs on US goods from 25% to 18% “in appreciation of our friendly and respectful relationship” with Prime Minister Modi, and that India would similarly cancel its tariffs on US goods.
