Dozens killed in RSF drone attack in Sudan’s war-torn South Kordofan

KHARTOM – Dozens of people were killed and several others injured in a Rapid Support Force (RSF) drone attack targeting a rally in a major city in Sudan’s war-torn South Kordofan state on Wednesday, local media reported.

The Sudan Tribune newspaper reported, citing local sources and medical organizations, that several areas in Diring were attacked by suicide drones, including the headquarters of the Sudanese army’s 54th brigade and the central market.

The latest RSF attack came a day after the government-aligned Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced it had broken a nearly two-year RSF siege on Diring and gained control of a key supply line.

Diring is located between the besieged capital of Kadugri and El Obeid, the capital of neighboring North Kordofan province, which the RSF is trying to siege.

The RSF and SAF have been fighting a brutal civil war for control of Sudan since April 2023, leaving thousands dead and millions displaced.

Since the siege was lifted, Dilling has endured waves of drone attacks that destroyed service facilities and caused several casualties.

Military sources told the Sudan Tribune that the RSF is trying to reinstate the blockade, but the SAF continues to hold the area and repel attacks near the strategic town of Habila in North Kordofan state.

Amid these clashes, the Sudanese Doctors Network called for an emergency humanitarian corridor to deliver life-saving food and medicine. According to local sources, the situation on the ground remains desperate, with severe shortages of medical services and critical supplies, particularly intravenous fluids.

A UN-backed assessment last year confirmed starvation in Kadugli, which has been under RSF siege for more than a year and a half.

More than 65,000 people have been evacuated from the Kordofan region since October, according to the latest United Nations figures.

The conflict has created what the United Nations describes as the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis, although some people have returned to their homes despite destroyed infrastructure. — Agency
