Yesterday (Friday), the European Union approved chemical recycling of plastics. While those in the field believe this is an effective tool to reduce carbon emissions, some are unconvinced by the technology due to concerns about its environmental impact and high cost.

The 27 member states of the European Union have agreed on how to calculate the mandatory percentage of recycled content in plastic packaging, as well as including chemical recycling within that percentage.

Currently, packaging must contain at least 25% recycled plastic, and this proportion will rise to 30% by 2030.

The European Commission proposed including chemical recycling among the tools adopted in this legislative text.

European Commission spokeswoman Anna Kaisa Itkonen described the listing as “an important first step towards setting rules for chemical recycling at European Union level”.

Investor concerns about geopolitical risks were heightened before the talks began, as Iran wanted the talks to be limited to its nuclear file, while the United States wanted to discuss Iran’s ballistic missile systems and support for regional militant groups.
