A fire at a scrap factory in the western part of Al Ghurfa district, followed by a series of explosions caused by military waste stored at the site, has thrown the Yemeni city of Sayun into a state of anxiety and panic.
Preliminary information suggests that the fire destroyed a store where people buy scrap metal, the cause of which is not yet clear, but that high temperatures caused projectiles and military waste inside the store to explode, and strong explosions could be heard in the area.
The sound of repeated explosions and shrapnel hitting nearby houses sent residents into a panic, with some families leaving their mud houses for fear of collapse and the fire spreading to a nearby gas station.
Civil defense teams were then able to bring the fire under control a few hours after it started, and no human casualties were recorded, although initial estimates from the inventory showed that the damage was limited to property losses.
The Yemeni city of Sayun has been thrown into a state of anxiety and panic after a fire broke out at a scrap factory in the west of the ‘Al-Ghurfa’ district and a successful explosion was caused by military remnants stored at the site.
Initial information suggests that the fire, whose cause is still unknown, destroyed a shop that buys steel scrap, before high temperatures caused munitions and military remnants stored inside the shop to explode, and loud explosions were heard in the area.
A series of explosions and shrapnel hitting nearby homes caused panic among residents, with some families leaving their mud houses fearing they would collapse or spread fire to a nearby fuel station.
A civil defense team subsequently successfully extinguished the fire several hours after it started, no human casualties were reported, and initial estimates from the assessment operation indicated that damage was limited to property losses.
