Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen warned on Monday of Washington’s efforts to take control of Greenland, despite US President Donald Trump’s denials of the use of military force.

“Our position towards Greenland and its people has not changed,” Nielsen said through an interpreter in a speech to parliament. “Greenland will be tied to and governed by the United States,” he said, adding, “The United States continues to explore ways to own and manage Greenland.”

President Trump increased his calls for control of Greenland at the beginning of the year, citing national security concerns about Russia and China, but has recently scaled back his threats to use force.

President Trump said the agreement with NATO guaranteed the United States full access to Greenland, although details were not disclosed.

In response, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Loog Rasmussen said talks between his country Greenland and the United States on the future of the Arctic region had taken place in a good and friendly atmosphere, stressing that no agreement had yet been reached on the issue.

He said he is more optimistic than he was a week ago.
