Haaland hits double as Norway passes Iraq

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Erling Haaland announced his arrival on the World Cup stage with two goals as Norway opened the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Iraq on Tuesday.

The Manchester City striker scored twice in his first World Cup appearance, fueling Norway’s first appearance in the competition since 1998 and underscoring why the Scandinavians are considered one of Europe’s most dangerous dark horses.

Haaland took the lead in the 29th minute with an improvised cross from David Moeller-Wolf, much to the delight of the red-clad Norwegian fans gathered inside the stadium.

Iraq hit back nine minutes later, with Aymen Hussein leveling the score with a header that briefly raised hopes of a famous result.

However, Haaland capitalized on a defensive mistake to restore Norway’s lead just before half-time. The striker intercepted a poor backpass, beat goalkeeper Jalal Hassan and slotted the ball into the net for his second goal of the night.

The goal took Haaland’s international tally to 57, underscoring his importance in Norway’s bid to qualify for the finals.

Asked about leading Norway’s World Cup challenge, Haaland said: “Of course I would.” “It’s important to continue without thinking too much.”

Norway took control after the break and added a third goal in the 76th minute with Leo Østigard heading in from Martin Ødegaard’s corner kick.

Hussein’s own goal in the final minute ended a difficult night for Iraq, giving Norway a resounding victory.

The result gave Norway a dream start to their return to the World Cup for the first time in 28 years and placed the team in a favorable position in Group I.

This is Iraq’s second ever appearance at the World Cup, and the first since 1986, but this loss means they cannot afford to make any mistakes in the remaining group stages.

Norway will now turn its attention to an even tougher test against France, while Iraq will be looking to bounce back in their next match.
