The Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority announced the start of the implementation of a direct interconnection project between its network and that of the Sultanate of Oman, a strategic step reflecting the development of the Gulf integration path in the energy sector and the strengthening of regional infrastructure.

Mohsen Al Hadrami, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of the Gulf Power Interconnection Authority Board, confirmed that the direct power interconnection project with the Sultanate is not just a technical expansion of the power grid, but rather an extension of the long-term strategic vision established by the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries when they approved the Gulf Power Interconnection project as one of the pillars of Gulf infrastructure integration. It is based on their belief that energy security constitutes the fundamental basis for national stability, economic growth and development sustainability.

He noted that the Gulf Electricity Interconnection has proven to be one of the most successful models of joint Gulf action for over 25 years. This will contribute to improving power grid reliability and achieving significant economic savings for GCC countries, it said, adding that the direct connectivity project with the Sultanate of Oman will strengthen the depth of the Gulf network, increase operational flexibility and embody an advanced model of Gulf partnership in financing critical infrastructure projects.

Ahmed bin Ali Al Ibrahim, CEO and Engineer of the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority, explained that the project is one of the largest expansion projects in the authority’s history and aims to strengthen the Gulf network’s ability to meet the rapid increase in electricity demand, given the internal network expansion, significant changes in electricity loads and increased power generation that the GCC countries are witnessing, in addition to supporting renewable energy projects and increasing electricity prices on the network.
