Despite the Houthi threat to flights to Mokha Airport, west of Taiz, Yemen’s Transport Minister Mohsen Haidara today (Sunday) ordered the first flight to Mokha Airport to be arranged next Wednesday, in his first decision since forming the government.

Yemeni Transport Ministry officials explained that a committee chaired by Transport Minister Mohsen Ali Haidara held a meeting yesterday to discuss the technical and administrative arrangements needed to operate direct flights from Moka Airport to Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz Airport at a rate of twice a week from next Wednesday, in accordance with the directives of the Chairman of the Presidential Command Council to resume flights to Moka Airport.

At the meeting, which was attended by Muti Al-Kubati, Director of the Commercial Planning Department, Murad Al-Khalidi, Director of the Jeddah Region, Saddam Al-Jaifi, Director of the Riyadh Region, Ihab Abdul Qadir, Secretary-General of the Yemen Ground Services Company, and numerous officials from the Ministry of Transport and Yemeni Aviation, the Minister of Transport stressed that the opening of flights would begin and all necessary procedures would be completed. The first flight will take place next Wednesday, he said, stressing the importance of adhering to the specified schedule and working as a team to ensure a successful launch process.

The Minister of Transport pointed out that the resumption of flights to Moka Airport is an important step in strengthening the air transport network, facilitating the mobility of citizens and supporting economic development activities of the city of Moka, explaining that the national leadership and the Ministry of Transport are keen to reopen the airport in a manner that is in the public interest and increase operational efficiency.

The first flight departed for Mokha airport earlier this month, but was forced to return to Jeddah airport after al-Houthis threatened to target the plane.
