TEHRAN – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Sunday that talks between Iran and the United States, which were held with the support of regional countries, marked a “step forward.”

“Dialogue has always been our strategy to achieve a peaceful solution,” Pezeshkian wrote in a post on X, adding that Iran’s approach to the nuclear issue is based on “rights guaranteed by the Non-Proliferation Treaty.”

He stressed that Iran “will respond to respect with respect, but not to words of force,” underscoring Iran’s long-standing position amid renewed tensions with the United States.

Iran and the United States resumed indirect talks on Friday after weeks of heightened tensions following US President Donald Trump’s warnings of possible military action against Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the talks as a “good start” and said talks could continue if mistrust was overcome.

He said both sides agreed to move forward with the diplomatic process and may meet again in Muscat, Oman, at a later date.

Araghchi reiterated that Iran’s missile program is not a subject of negotiation now or in the future, calling it a defense issue.
