Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that Italy and its African partners have focused on the continent’s debt burden in recent talks, as Rome offers countries the opportunity to suspend debt payments in the event of extreme weather.
“Today we have renewed our focus on debt, an issue of vital importance for Africa,” Prime Minister Meloni said at the conclusion of the second African-Italian Summit in Addis Ababa yesterday (Friday) evening.
It added: “We have launched a major effort to transfer debt for joint development projects. To this provision we will add a provision to suspend debt payments to countries affected by extreme weather events.”

“We have launched a major effort to convert debt into joint development projects. We have also included a provision for a moratorium on debt payments to countries affected by extreme weather events.”
