L&T signs Nextpower joint venture for 2.5GW Saudi solar power project

Indian construction conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has signed on with NextPower Arabia, a newly established joint venture between NextPower (formerly NextTracker) and Abunayan Holding, to provide 2.25 gigawatts (GWp) of advanced solar tracking systems to the Bisha Solar Project, which is being developed by an Akwa-led consortium.

The project, located in the Kingdom’s Asir province, was procured by the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) as part of the sixth wave of the Kingdom’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), overseen by the Ministry of Energy.

Bisha is the largest of the Wave 6 solar projects. The project represents an important addition to Saudi Arabia’s growing scale portfolio and supports the Kingdom’s long-term energy and decarbonization goals.

This new 2.25 GWp order is the first major project to be delivered through the Nextpower Arabia joint venture, which is now fully operational.

Through its local sales, manufacturing, distribution and supply chain capabilities, Nextpower Arabia supports the efficient deployment of utility-scale solar power plants while driving industrial and workforce development in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Bharati Kumar, General Manager (Renewables International), L&T, said: “We have great confidence in Nextpower Arabia’s ability to provide cutting-edge utility-grade solar power solutions, which will help us deliver maximum performance and low-cost clean energy into the future through the new Bisha solar power plant.”

“Localizing the production of these new systems, which will form the basis of the Bisha plant, will increase the efficiency of the entire development process, while reducing the cost and impact of international transportation,” he said.

“The Mena region is a top strategic priority for NextPower. This project builds on our long-standing partnership with ACWA Power and L&T and marks an important milestone for our new joint venture with Abunayan Holding,” said NextPower Founder and CEO Dan Sugar.

He added: “Through NextPower Arabia, we are localizing the industry’s most resilient and intelligent solar power plant technology, specifically designed for the region’s challenging conditions, while strengthening the local supply chain to support Saudi Arabia’s long-term energy transition goals.”
