French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that Saudi Arabia could deliver a pipeline through its territory to the Red Sea and the Mediterranean via Egypt, as part of international efforts to reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz.
“In addition to allowing the United Arab Emirates to own a pipeline exiting from the other side of the strait, it is possible to work on establishing a gas pipeline that passes through Iraq, Syria and Lebanon and exits from other ports,” President Macron said in a statement to French channel TF1 before the start of the G7 summit in Evian.
The French President stressed that the main purpose of these projects is to find alternative routes for energy transmission, which requires the construction of huge infrastructure and is a fundamental commitment of the G7.
President Macron expressed a positive assessment of the U.S.-Iran deal, saying, “This is a good thing,” and said, “We will do everything in our power and starting tonight we will start moving and mobilizing.”
President Macron signaled that the initiative will not be limited to G7 members but will also be extended to invited partners, noting that there will be a session dedicated to Iran and the situation in the Middle East, which will include Egypt, the United Emirates and Qatar.
He stressed the need to make every effort to make the agreement a reality and peacefully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which is of great importance to peoples around the world, as around a quarter of the world’s oil and gas production passes through the Strait.
President Macron made clear France’s military preparations, noting the existence of a joint mission with the UK and the participation of other countries such as the Netherlands and Italy, announcing that the aircraft carrier (Charles de Gaulle) and accompanying naval vessels were ready and could be deployed within a few days.
Regarding the possibility of imposing a transit fee on the Channel, President Macron warned that the measure would set a dangerous precedent that would increase prices globally, stressing that it would not comply with international law and stressing that France would do everything in its power to prevent this from happening.
