Manchester City face the risk of up to 60 points being deducted from their English Premier League Championship score if they are found guilty of financial irregularities between 2009 and 2018.
The investigation into the English Premier League’s alleged breaches of regulations was concluded in December 2024 after a 12-week hearing, but the independent panel has yet to issue a final decision.
Comparison of amount of evidence and case law
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire said around 500,000 pieces of evidence had been presented in court by both the defense and prosecution.
In a statement carried by the Daily Express, he added: “If we look at precedent, we see that Everton and Nottingham Forest received six and four demerit points respectively for offenses spread over three years. The issue against Manchester City is much greater as it spans nine years. If found guilty, the fines are likely to be heavier.”

Possibility of punishment
He added: “I therefore think a zero should be added to the results we see from Nottingham Forest and Everton. Therefore, a deduction of 40 to 60 points is logical and consistent with previous decisions, in my opinion.”
“When I look at cases that resemble fraud cases, I think we have reached the final stage of sentencing,” he concluded.
