Mitsubishi Power, the power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), a leading global industrial group spanning energy, logistics, infrastructure, industrial machinery, aerospace and defense, has been awarded a contract to supply key boiler components to convert oil-fired boilers to dual-fuel boilers at the Jeddah South and Shuqaiq power plants in Saudi Arabia.
The contract was signed by Dar Al Balad Contracting and Operations (DAB), a Saudi EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) company, and Mitsubishi Corporation Machinery, an authorized distributor of Mitsubishi Power.
Mitsubishi Power will utilize its technological capabilities as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) responsible for designing and manufacturing existing boilers to support Saudi Arabia’s energy policy aimed at switching fuels for power generation, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the country.
The targeted thermal power plants, Jeddah South Power Plant and Shuqaiq Power Plant, are both located on the west coast of Saudi Arabia.
Each plant has a capacity of 2.9 GW and consists of four units (units 1 to 4). Operations began in 2017. Mitsubishi Power supplies existing boiler parts on an OEM basis during plant construction, and will utilize these existing assets to carry out the boiler supply work associated with the fuel conversion.
This fuel conversion project is being advanced based on Saudi Arabia’s energy policy, and the end customer is Saudi Energy (SE).
Mitsubishi Power, through its long-standing local partner DAB, will support the conversion of existing heavy oil-fired boilers to dual-fuel boilers and provide technical support for long-term stable operation of the plant.
Under the national strategy “Saudi Vision 2030,” Saudi Arabia is promoting the switch from heavy oil to natural gas as the fuel for power generation, with the aim of increasing the share of natural gas-fired power generation to over 50%. The government has instructed domestic power producers, including SE, to start using natural gas, and is accelerating fuel conversion plans at power plants across the country.
In particular, the West Coast has a high proportion of heavy oil-fired power generation, and the demand for electricity is strong.
In order to achieve both a stable supply of electricity and environmental demands, it is essential to convert existing power plants from heavy oil to natural gas.
Commenting on the agreement, Makoto Fujita, Senior General Manager, Steam Power Division, Energy Systems Division, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, said, “The Jeddah South Power Plant and the Shuqaik Power Plant have played an important role in ensuring a stable supply of electricity on the west coast of Saudi Arabia.As an OEM of existing boilers, we are very proud to be able to contribute to the country’s energy transition and CO2 emissions reduction through participation in this fuel conversion project.”
Mr. Fujita said, “We will do our best to make this project a success and will continue to support the long-term stable operation of the plant.”
