Doha, Qatar: Driven by increased demand for services across roads, land transport planning, public transport and licensing, the Land Transport sector processed 6,585 transactions in the first half of 2026 (H1), underscoring the sector’s expanding role in supporting Qatar’s transport network.
According to Ministry of Transport data, the sector recorded 3,593 transactions in the second quarter of this year, an increase of 21% compared to 2,992 transactions in the same period last year.
The latest figures reflect sustained growth in demand for the sector’s services, including road issues, land transport planning, public transport and licensing, as the Ministry continues to strengthen the country’s transport infrastructure and regulatory services.
This reflects the wide range of responsibilities assumed by the Land Transport Authority, which oversees key aspects of Qatar’s transport infrastructure, road safety, planning and commercial transport regulation.
Sustained volumes reflect continued demand for services as the country moves forward with infrastructure projects and strengthens mobility solutions in line with national development goals. The Ministry noted that the services provided during this period covered a variety of operational and regulatory activities aimed at ensuring a safe, efficient and integrated transport system.
Key services provided include railway safety, road defect detection, building permit applications, bus stop relocation, road safety initiatives, traffic impact studies, directional signage, bus service related transactions, and approval of land transportation network planning projects.
The data further revealed that 1,385 transactions were related to roads, making it the largest category of services provided during the quarter. This was followed by 923 transactions related to land transportation planning, 733 transactions related to public transportation affairs, and 552 transactions related to land transportation permits.
Additionally, the Land Transport Department continued to issue preliminary licenses for limousine, land transport and car rental activities, supporting private sector entry into Qatar’s transport industry while ensuring compliance with national regulations.
Roads accounted for the largest proportion of transactions in the quarter, reflecting the importance of maintaining and developing Qatar’s road infrastructure as traffic volumes and urban development continue to expand. Services in this category include identifying road defects, implementing road safety measures, reviewing directional signage, and coordinating infrastructure-related requests with relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, land transport planning remained a major area of activity. Planning services include preparing transportation studies, assessing transportation impacts, and coordinating the design and expansion of surface transportation networks to accommodate future growth.
Public transport also accounted for a significant portion of overall transactions, highlighting the ministry’s continued focus on improving public transport and strengthening transport services across the country. These activities include matters related to bus operations, bus stop locations, and public transport infrastructure.
The Ground Transportation Licensing Service continued to facilitate the regulation of commercial transportation activities by handling licensing requirements and pre-approvals for transportation operators, limousine companies, and rental car operations.
The latest quarterly results demonstrate the Ministry’s continued commitment to providing efficient public services while supporting Qatar’s broader transport strategy. The Ministry has worked to improve customer experience and reduce processing times across various transportation services through digital transformation initiatives and streamlining administrative procedures.
The first half transaction value reaffirms the Department for Transport’s continued commitment to strengthening transport governance and delivering high-quality services that support national development priorities while maintaining a safe, reliable and efficient surface transportation system across the country.
Recently, Mowasalat (Kalwa) conducted a successful trial run of electric robotaxis under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport.
Robot taxis were seen as an extension of the project’s success, plying between the Ministry of Transport headquarters and the Old Doha Port.
