Portuguese club Benfica have lodged a complaint with the European Football Association (UEFA) against Real Madrid star Federico Valverde, according to reports.

Real Madrid defeated hosts Benfica without conceding in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 qualifier last Tuesday, a match marred by Benfica player Pristiani’s alleged racist insults towards Merengue star Vinicius Junior, which the Brazilian informed the match’s referee, necessitating the activation of anti-racism protocols.

Public investigation in Europe

UEFA is investigating the incident after Real Madrid submitted evidence following an independent investigation into the incident between the Argentine and the Brazilian.

Details of the complaint against Valverde

According to Spanish newspaper As, Benfica have lodged a complaint with UEFA, alleging that Valverde threw a strong punch at a player when there was no contest for the ball, which they consider to be an assault on Samuel Dahl by Valverde.

AS referee analyst Iturralde Gonzalez said: “This is a red card. Valverde hit a Benfica player for no reason. He should have been sent off.”
