A fiery explosion was witnessed near a train station in the Russian capital Moscow in the early hours of today (Tuesday), causing casualties. Authorities said the attack was an explosive attack targeting a police patrol.
According to official reports, the explosion occurred near Savilovsky station in the Saberovskaya district, killing one police officer with the rank of sub-inspector and injuring two others. According to information, someone threw an explosive device at a police car parked at the scene.
According to Russian media, police said one of the dead was suspected of carrying out the attack and was believed to have planted an explosive device targeting the patrol. Investigators also said they reviewed video recordings that showed a person approaching a police car and placing items inside the vehicle outside the Saviolovsky Police Station before the explosion occurred.
In a statement released through the Telegram app, Russia’s Interior Ministry said the explosion occurred in the station square at 12:05 a.m. (21:05 GMT, Monday night).
The statement added that an unspecified explosive device was detonated after the gunman approached two traffic police officers sitting in a patrol car, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.
Russian authorities are continuing to investigate to determine the circumstances and motive of the attack.
