Israeli security officials announced today (Monday) that they have reopened the Rafah border between Gaza and Egypt to residents of the Gaza Strip in both directions.
First day of operation
“For now, following the arrival of the European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) team representing the European Union, the Rafah crossing has been opened for the movement of residents into and out of the country,” the official said.
According to Egyptian government media, the Rafah land border crossing will be able to allow 50 people to pass in each direction once it is officially operational.
The Cairo News Channel reported that the number of people leaving Egypt for Gaza in the first few days of operation at the Rafah Crossing was 50, equal to the number of people leaving the Gaza Strip for Egypt more than two years after the end of the war. Egyptian sources announced yesterday that 150 wounded Palestinians had entered the country, compared to 150 Palestinians leaving the country each day who have received treatment and health care and recovered.
Egyptian authorities declared maximum readiness in Sinai hospitals to receive Gaza wounded upon the arrival of the first group returning to the Gaza Strip through the Rafah border crossing.
Returnee checkpoint
Yesterday, Sunday, Israel announced the opening of a special corridor to screen Palestinians entering the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military has released documents for a checkpoint where facial recognition and careful checks will be conducted for people returning to Gaza through the Rafah border.
The Israeli military said returnees would not be transferred to the Gaza Strip until they arrived at Israel’s Regavim checkpoint. This process is scheduled to begin today.

Israel announced today that it will allow 50 patients to be discharged daily from Monday. Only two people accompany each patient, the Israel Broadcasting Corporation reported.
Officials added that the Rafah crossing will operate for six hours a day from 9 am to 3 pm in the first phase.
The European Union mission operating the Rafah crossing entered the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing accompanied by Israeli troops, in preparation for moving to the crossing through the Philadelphia axis and opening it to Gazans.
According to Palestinian officials, the World Health Organization and the Red Cross are coordinating with Palestinian officials present at the crossing to arrange for the transport of the injured from hospitals in the Gaza Strip to the Rafah checkpoint.
He added that Egyptian medical authorities at Al-Arish Hospital and Bir Al-Abd Hospital in North Sinai are preparing to receive patients and injured coming from the Gaza Strip.
