RIYADH – The Saudi Ministry of Defense said its air defense systems thwarted multiple drone attacks targeting Riyadh, the capital’s diplomatic district and the Shaybah oil field.
Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki said an attempted drone attack targeting the diplomatic area was thwarted by air defenses.
He confirmed that no property damage or injuries to civilians were reported after the drone was shot down.
The incident was the second attempted attack on Riyadh’s diplomatic district, following a previous attack by Iran that targeted the US embassy in Riyadh using two drones, causing limited fire and minor damage to the building.
In a separate statement, al-Maliki said an attempt to target Riyadh using six drones was also thwarted, intercepted and destroyed over the city.
He added that air defense forces intercepted and destroyed four more drones east of Riyadh.
The spokesperson also said that another drone was intercepted and destroyed in an open field on its way to the Shaiba oil field.
