A three-month-old baby girl has died in a tragic accident after being attacked by a dog inside her home in the northern English town of Redcar, according to police and witness reports.
Police say a 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing the death of a young girl after his dog became dangerously out of control, and has since been released on conditional bail, The Sun reported.
The incident occurred yesterday (Thursday) evening when security forces responded to an emergency call that a child had been attacked inside a home. Upon arrival, the baby was found to have died from a dog bite.
During the intervention, armed police shot and killed one of the two dogs in the street after it escaped, but were able to control the other dog on the property.
Witnesses said the two dogs were pocket bullies, one of which was running on the road after the incident, which caused panic among residents, who were asked to stay inside until the situation calmed down.
One resident also reported that the dog had tried to attack others on the street. A neighbor was forced to take shelter in her car after the dog she was trying to offer help tried to attack her.
Witnesses described a “horrifying” scene and heard cries for help, including “help the girl”, coming from inside the house.
In this connection, police confirmed that a 31-year-old woman was bitten on the arm and taken to hospital for treatment.
Officials said that after testing the two dogs, it was determined that they did not belong to legally prohibited breeds.
Cleveland Police Officer Rachel Stockdale said the incident was tragic and heartbreaking, and asked that the privacy of the child’s family be respected at this difficult time, stressing that the investigation into the incident continues.
Local police chief Emily Harrison said the incident was shocking and heartbreaking, and said the investigation was still in its early stages, but appealed to witnesses or anyone with camera footage to come forward with information.
According to local accounts, the child was in the care of a family friend at the home at the time of the incident and did not live there permanently.
The incident shocked the area, particularly as it occurred when many children were on the streets during the school holidays, with some residents describing the scene as a “horrifying standoff” between police and two dogs.
