The Civil Aviation Authority of India said on Monday that an ambulance carrying seven people, including two crew members, crashed in Jharkhand state.
Officials said the Beechcraft C90, operated by Redbird Airlines, took off from Ranchi at 13:41 GMT, lost contact and disappeared from radar screens after the crew requested a deviation from the flight path due to bad weather.
Search and rescue operations are currently underway at the accident site, and an official investigation team has been dispatched to clarify the situation.
Local media confirmed at least one death among the passengers, including patient Sanjay Kumar, 41, who suffered 63% burns, as well as the team of doctor Vikas Kumar Gupta, paramedic Sachin Kumar Mishra, assistants Archana Devi and Dul Kumar, and pilots Vivek Vikas Bhagat and Subrajiv Singh.
Ranchi Airport Director Vinod Kumar said bad weather could have been a factor in the accident, stressing that the final cause would be determined through an official investigation.
The crash is the third fatal civil aviation accident in India since June, following the Indian Airlines Boeing Dreamliner crash, with the final report on the previous crash still awaited.
