The United Nations has again accused rapid support forces of committing widespread atrocities during their capture of the city of El Fasher, which may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Today (Friday), UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk revealed that more than 6,000 killings were recorded in the first three days of the rapid support force offensive on El Fasher.
The United Nations High Commissioner reiterated his call on both parties to the Sudanese conflict to take effective measures to prevent serious violations by the armed forces under his leadership.
In late October, Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dakloor captured El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, after a siege that lasted more than 18 months.
The United Nations recorded mass killings and executions of civilians in the city and on the run. Witnesses and refugees confirmed that many civilians were raped and killed with live ammunition.
Several reports confirm that massacres, rapes, and kidnappings were witnessed in the rapid support force’s fight to take control of El Fasher.
“Responsibility for these atrocities lies entirely with rapid support forces, their allies, and those who support them,” Turkey said, underscoring the need for the international community to do more.
