The US Central Command (CENTCOM) praised the Lebanese military after it announced it had discovered a Hezbollah underground tunnel for the second time in the past two months.
Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, said the dismantling of tunnels used by non-governmental organizations to store ammunition, missiles and attack drones will contribute to strengthening peace and stability in Lebanon and the region as a whole, adding that the accomplishment reflects the skilled and professional work of the Lebanese military.
Mr. Cooper highly praised the role of the US-led mechanical team in contributing to the implementation of the commitments agreed between Israel and Lebanon.
He noted that such efforts are an important step in reducing security threats and enhancing regional stability.
Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri confirmed earlier this month that, as in the south, the military will complete the task of containing weapons north of the Litani River, adding that Army Commander Rudolf Heikal will present the second phase of containing weapons between the Litani and Awari rivers to the Council of Ministers as soon as he returns from a visit to the United States.
In a press statement, Mitri suggested that Hezbollah was refusing to hand over arms in northern Litani, seeing it as an obstacle to the military.
He pointed out that despite the obstacles, the country continues with its decision to restrict arms throughout the country and has no intention of reversing it, that decisions on war and peace remain solely in the hands of the government, and that the government refuses to involve the country in any regional wars or make it a field for other countries to fight.
