Germany’s Environment Minister Carsten Schneider has expressed a desire to import green hydrogen produced using climate-friendly methods from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Speaking on the sidelines of a visit to Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh, Schneider said in a statement to the German Press Agency (DPA) that his country needs to work with Saudi Arabia to help German industry move towards climate neutrality.
ideal conditions
The previous German government had high hopes for hydrogen as a future energy carrier. Although there is no retreating from this policy, the current German Economy Minister Katharina Reich has admitted that hydrogen is currently not available in sufficient quantities and remains expensive.
Countries like Saudi Arabia, which have ideal conditions for solar power plants, can produce hydrogen in a climate-friendly way.
Main role
Hydrogen is expected to play a key role in a climate-neutral economic system, alongside electricity generated from clean sources.
Gas produced in a carbon-neutral manner will be used in new gas-fired power plants to generate electricity when energy from wind and solar is not sufficient.
It is planned to use hydrogen instead of coke in steelmaking blast furnaces, avoiding large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions.
