Qatar – McDermott, a provider of engineering and construction solutions for the energy industry, has been awarded a decommissioning definition engineering contract from Qatar Energy for Qatar’s first offshore decommissioning initiative.

Under the scope of the contract, McDermott will develop a comprehensive technical and commercial framework and conduct detailed techno-economic studies to ensure the safe and planned removal and decommissioning of 27 aging offshore platforms.

This includes all associated subsea infrastructure, including subsea cables and pipelines located in the Al Qalqara, Id El Sharghi and Meydan Mazam fields.

McDermott provides solutions that prioritize safety, efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Mike Sutherland, McDermott’s senior vice president, Middle East Offshore, said: “As the first decommissioning project in the country, and given the scale of the assets being retired, this award is an important milestone and an exciting new chapter for McDermott, Qatar Energy and the State of Qatar.” “We are uniquely positioned to deliver a breakthrough framework that sets new industry benchmarks and establishes best-in-class standards for future decommissioning efforts in the region and beyond.”

“McDermott has installed the majority of Qatar’s offshore assets,” added Neil Gagnon, Qatar country director and vice president of operations. “Through our long-standing and trusted partnership with Qatar Energy, we are proud to draw on our decades of experience and continue to deliver innovative, lifecycle-focused energy solutions.”
