EGYPT – Aswan has been selected as the 2026 “Tourist City of the Year” by the Organization for Economic Co-operation in Developing Countries-8 (D-8) after receiving a majority vote of member states.
The Egyptian city won the title for the second year in a row, following competition from three other nominated cities: Azerbaijan, Iran and Pakistan.
The selection was made based on a coordinated effort between the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which submitted a comprehensive file and promotional material detailing the city’s tourism infrastructure and assets.
Founded in 1997, the D-8 organization serves as a framework for cooperation between members from various sectors, including tourism. The group consists of nine countries: Egypt, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, with a total population of over 1.2 billion people.
According to the nomination file, the award reflects Aswan’s historical and cultural status and status as a tourist destination. Officials hope the designation will increase tourism to Egypt and Aswan from the D-8 member states.
