PureLab, operator of the Middle East’s largest laboratory network and a subsidiary of PureHealth, is collaborating with LODD Autonomous, a leading developer of advanced air mobility and autonomous flight systems, to run a pilot project using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to transport blood samples between SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) and PureLab’s Abu Dhabi headquarters. The partnership was launched with a memorandum signing ceremony during Abu Dhabi Autonomy Week (ADAW), hosted by the Smart Autonomous Systems Council (SASC), with support from the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIO).

This initiative aims to improve and accelerate the speed and efficiency of transporting critical medical samples through LODD’s next-generation UAV technology. This innovative solution enables the safe and reliable daily transfer of critical blood samples in compliance with the emirate’s relevant health regulatory standards, reducing diagnostic turnaround times and improving the overall speed and efficiency of the medical response.

“Through the Smart Autonomous Vehicle Industry (SAVI) cluster, Abu Dhabi is advancing the frontiers of self-driving technology through real-world applications that directly improve lives,” said Badr Al-Olama, Director of Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO). “This pilot is a decisive step in how autonomous driving systems can enhance healthcare delivery and underlines Abu Dhabi’s position as a world-class test bed where the future of mobility with global impact is designed and deployed.”

This project represents a major step forward in integrating self-driving technology into medical logistics and driving performance efficiency, operational sustainability and service quality across Abu Dhabi’s healthcare ecosystem. We also aim to minimize our environmental impact while enhancing the efficiency and reliability of our diagnostic services.

“Every minute saved in transporting a blood sample is a minute gained for patients waiting for a diagnosis,” said Arindam Halder, CEO of PureLab. “By integrating drone logistics into our diagnostic network, we are not only reducing delivery times, but advancing the entire continuum of care. This pilot reflects our belief that innovation in healthcare must serve people faster, smarter, and with greater environmental responsibility. This is a perfect example of how Abu Dhabi’s vision for automation and sustainability has real-world impact.”

Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, said: “This pilot project is a real-world demonstration of how autonomous aviation can enhance medical logistics through fast, safe and sustainable medical transport solutions. What we are doing today is not a distant dream, but a practical step towards increasing responsiveness and improving the quality of medical services in Abu Dhabi.”

This collaboration demonstrates how the UAE government’s vision and private sector innovation can come together to deliver innovative solutions. This project, supported by ADIO and SASC, strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a living laboratory for future technologies in healthcare, mobility and sustainability.

The project belongs to the Smart Autonomous Vehicle Industry (SAVI) cluster, an initiative of Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) aimed at accelerating the adoption of intelligent mobility solutions. Insights gleaned from these trials will help establish clear standards and regulatory frameworks to enable the commercial use of future medical air transport technologies in the emirate and ensure both safety and operational efficiency.

The partnership underscores Abu Dhabi’s position as a global champion of innovation in autonomous flight and smart healthcare. PureLab is helping shape a new era of connected and sustainable healthcare by integrating precision medicine and precision mobility. In this era, Abu Dhabi is leading the world in transforming futuristic ideas into everyday solutions.
