Saudi Railways seeks bid for 10 new passenger trains

Saudi Arabian Railways (SAR) has issued a tender for the design and manufacture of 10 new passenger trains for its northern network, as part of its efforts to develop transport systems and increase the efficiency of passenger rail services across the Kingdom.

This is in line with the goals of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030.

The new trains will operate on a northern network spanning approximately 2,700 km, connecting several major cities including Riyadh, Al Majmaa, Qasim, Ha’il, Al Juf and Al Qurayyat, with plans to expand the network in the coming years through the addition of new passenger stations, including Al Zurfi.

The tender comes as part of SAR’s phased and continuous approach to modernizing and expanding its passenger train fleet across its various networks.

The scope of the project includes the design, manufacture and supply of new passenger trains, in addition to the provision of rolling stock maintenance services, contributing to enhanced operational readiness and long-term asset sustainability. The deadline for bidding was set for May 11th.

SAR CEO Dr. Bashar Al Malik said expanding the passenger train fleet is a strategic objective and an important step in the company’s plans to further develop its passenger transport services.

He said: “The launch of the new trains will help us meet the growing demand for passenger travel by increasing operational capacity on the Northern Network to almost three times current levels, increasing total seat capacity to more than 2.4 million seats per year and strengthening SAR’s ability to support the continued growth of intercity passenger transport.”

He added that the company is currently building 10 new passenger trains to operate on the Eastern Line as part of a comprehensive plan to develop passenger transport services, improve operational efficiency and increase service reliability across the national rail network. -TradeArabia News Service
